Therapeutic boundaries define the therapist-client relationship, addressing dual relationships, professional limits, bartering risks, and countertransference. With telehealth expanding, ethical challenges are increasing. This workshop explores key concerns, literature updates, expert insights, and relevant ethics codes.This course fulfills the NYS requirement for mental health professionals to complete three hours of training on maintaining professional boundaries. It is not specific to New York State and can also meet other states’ ethics, boundaries, and general CE requirements.
Therapeutic boundaries define the roles and limitations of the relationship between therapist and client.  Primary areas of concern include dual relationships, both sexual and nonsexual, setting and managing professional boundaries, the risks of bartering,  delayed discovery in multiple relationships, and managing countertransference reactions.  Additionally, psychotherapists today are challenged as ethical decision-makers by the ever-expanding development and use of various forms of telehealth.  Literature updates, expert opinion, and relevant ethics codes will be discussed.This course fulfills the NYS requirement for mental health professionals to complete three hours of training on maintaining professional boundaries. It is not specific to New York State and can also meet other states’ ethics, boundaries, and general CE requirements.

Pamela Harmell, PhD

Dr. Harmell is a national lecturer specializing in legal and ethical issues in clinical practice. She is a Professor at the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology, has written extensively in professional publications on ethical practice, and has formally studied law. She is the Past President of the Board of Psychology. Dr. Harmell is the former Chair of the California State Ethics Committee and former Chair of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association Ethics Committee. She served on the Board of Directors of the California Psychological Association and is the Past President of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association.

After this training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how to place the concerning multiple relationship behavior in a contextual frame in order to recognize potential damage to the client.
  • Explain the importance of awareness of burnout and countertransference with regard to potential boundary violations.
  • Describe when it is appropriate and inappropriate to write a letter for a client requesting some special services.

10:30-11:00 am – boundary crossings vs boundary violations

11:00-11:30 am – bartering

11:30-11:45 am – Break

11:45-12:15 pm –legal and ethical issues for online therapy

12:15-12:45 pm –handling countertransference and burnout

12:45-1:05 –writing letters at client request

1:05-1:15 – delayed discovery issues

ASWB ACE

NY State Board of Social Workers

Clinical Events, LLC is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #SW-0828.

NJ State Board of Social Workers & Professional Counselors

New Jersey Social Work Examiners Board accepts ASWB ACE Provider credits.

New Jersey Professional Counselors Board accepts NBCC-approved CE provider credits.

All Other States

All other states accept ASWB ACE Provider credits and NBCC-approved CE provider credits. Licensees are responsible for determining whether courses meet the CE requirements in their jurisdictions. States and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for credit.

Canada Social Workers

BC, AB, SK, MB, ON, and QC accept ASWB ACE-approved provider programs to meet licensure renewal requirements.  Licensees are responsible for determining whether courses meet the CE requirements in their province. Provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for credit.

Canada Counsellors

Clinical Events is an NBCC-approved provider.  Licensees are responsible for determining whether courses meet the CE requirements in their province. Provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for credit.
