Exploring Ethical Considerations of Transference and Countertransference

Oct. 30, 2026

10:00 AM - 1:15 PM (EST)

Virtual Event
3 Ethics CE Credits
Transference and countertransference shape every therapeutic relationship—whether we name them or not. This course helps therapists ethically recognize, understand, and respond to these dynamics with greater self-awareness, clinical clarity, and confidence, strengthening the therapeutic alliance while protecting client welfare and professional boundaries.

Transference and countertransference are natural occurrences within the interpersonal relationship between client and therapist. Gaining understanding of how these phenomena occur in therapy and everyday life encourages clinicians to be more fully attuned with their clients and track important meanings in the work. This webinar will explain these events and illustrate them in terms of how they manifest in therapy. Emphasis on how to stay “on track” during these unconscious processes will be shared. Discussion will also examine how the therapist can understand and manage their own experiences of countertransference. Clinicians will be able to explore these meanings with their clients, both directly and indirectly, in a manner that aids in enhancing the therapeutic relationship and client growth.

Session Highlights
  • Explore examples of transference and countertransference.
  • Recognize the signs of countertransference within yourself and those you supervise.
  • Learn about the potential consequences of unaddressed countertransference.
