Understanding Emotion Regulation: How DBT Skills Help Us Find Balance

Apr. 10, 2026

10:00 AM - 1:15 PM (EST)

Virtual Event
3 CE Credits
Emotions can be powerful — but they don’t have to take control. Join us to explore DBT emotion regulation tools that help clients (and you!) stay grounded when feelings run high.  Learn to teach practical, compassionate strategies like checking the facts, opposite action, and self-validation — and walk away with a toolkit for calm, confident emotional balance.

Why do our emotions sometimes feel so intense, and what can we do to stay steady when they do? This workshop takes a deep dive into the DBT model of emotion regulation, exploring how emotions work, why they’re important, and what happens when they become overwhelming.  Clinicians will learn how to teach and apply DBT emotion regulation skills in a way that feels authentic and effective for clients. Together, we’ll explore practical tools such as checking the facts, building mastery, and opposite action, while also emphasizing the importance of compassion, validation, and self-understanding. By the end of this training, attendees will leave with a deeper appreciation for the function of emotions and a toolkit of DBT strategies to help
both clients and themselves manage emotional intensity with greater confidence.

Session Highlights
  • The Function of Feelings: Understand why emotions exist, what they’re trying to communicate, and how to help clients interpret them without judgment.
  • Decoding the DBT Model of Emotion: Learn how to break down the emotion regulation model into teachable, digestible parts that make sense to clients.
  • Core Emotion Regulation Skills in Action: Practice using DBT tools such as checking the facts, opposite action, and building mastery through real-world examples and guided exercises.
  • Balancing Change and Acceptance: Explore how validation and compassion enhance emotion regulation work and prevent clients from feeling pathologized.
  • Teaching Emotional Balance Authentically: Discover how to weave emotion regulation into ongoing therapy sessions in a way that feels natural, effective, and individualized for each client.

Founder and owner of Wise Mind Counseling, a thriving DBT-based private practice in New York City. She specializes in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and applies it in her work with individuals navigating Borderline Personality Disorder, Eating Disorders, and Substance Use Disorders, with a particular passion for supporting LGBTQIA+ youth.  Lexi earned her undergraduate degree from Hofstra University and her graduate degree from the University of Miami. With over a decade of experience in inpatient and outpatient settings, she believes effective therapy is never one-size-fits-all. Her approach is highly individualized, strengths-based, and deeply collaborative, rooted in the DBT principle that client and clinician are equal partners, rowing together toward the client’s goals.  Beyond her clinical work, Lexi is a highly sought-after speaker and educator, known for her dynamic, relatable, and engaging teaching style—often compared to the likes of Brené Brown. Whether through storytelling, humor, or interactive exercises, Lexi has a knack for making even the most complex concepts feel accessible, inspiring, and fun to learn.
