Navigate the gray areas of therapeutic boundaries. Explore dual relationships, countertransference, telehealth challenges, and more—with insights from expert opinion, ethics codes, and current literature.This course fulfills the NYS requirement for mental health professionals to complete three hours of training on maintaining professional boundaries. It is not specific to New York State and can also meet other states’ ethics, boundaries, and general CE requirements.
Therapeutic boundaries define the roles and limitations of the relationship between therapist and client.  Primary areas of concern include dual relationships, both sexual and nonsexual, setting and managing professional boundaries, the risks of bartering,  delayed discovery in multiple relationships, and managing countertransference reactions.  Additionally, psychotherapists today are challenged as ethical decision-makers by the ever-expanding development and use of various forms of telehealth.  Literature updates, expert opinion, and relevant ethics codes will be discussed.This course fulfills the NYS requirement for mental health professionals to complete three hours of training on maintaining professional boundaries. Pamela Harmell, PhD

Dr. Harmell is a national lecturer specializing in legal and ethical issues in clinical practice. She is a Professor at the Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology, has written extensively in professional publications on ethical practice, and has formally studied law. She is the Past President of the Board of Psychology. Dr. Harmell is the former Chair of the California State Ethics Committee and former Chair of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association Ethics Committee. She served on the Board of Directors of the California Psychological Association and is the Past President of the Los Angeles County Psychological Association.

After this training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how to place the concerning multiple relationship behavior in a contextual frame in order to recognize potential damage to the client.
  • Explain the importance of awareness of burnout and countertransference with regard to potential boundary violations.
  • Describe when it is appropriate and inappropriate to write a letter for a client requesting some special services.

11:00-11:30 am – bartering

11:30-11:45 am – Break

11:45-12:15 pm –legal and ethical issues for online therapy

12:15-12:45 pm –handling countertransference and burnout

12:45-1:05 –writing letters at client request

1:05-1:15 – delayed discovery issues

All registrations are non-refundable. However, you may request a full credit toward a future training if:

  • You notify us at least 72 hours prior to the event start time.
  • Credit is valid for up to 6 months from the original event date.
  • No credit will be issued for no-shows or same-day cancellations.

Clinical Events, LLC, (provider # 2201) is approved as an ACE provider to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 11/01/2024 – 11/01/2025.

NY State Board of Psychologists

NY State Board of Social Workers

NY State Board of Mental Health Counselors

NJ State Board of Social Workers & Professional Counselors

The New Jersey Social Work Examiners Board accepts ASWB ACE Provider credits. The New Jersey Professional Counselors Board accepts NBCC-approved CE provider credits.

All Other States

All other states accept ASWB ACE Provider credits and NBCC-approved CE provider credits. Licensees are responsible for determining whether courses meet the CE requirements in their jurisdictions. States and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for credit.

Florida Certification Board

Clinical Events is approved by the Florida Certification Board (FCB) to offer continuing education programs (Provider # 5527-A).

Canada Social Workers

BC, AB, SK, MB, ON, and QC accept ASWB ACE-approved provider programs to meet licensure renewal requirements.  Licensees are responsible for determining whether courses meet the CE requirements in their province. Provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for credit.

Canada Counsellors

Clinical Events is an NBCC-approved provider.  Licensees are responsible for determining whether courses meet the CE requirements in their province. Provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for credit.
