Emotion dysregulation is a primary clinical focus for many professionals. Not only that, emotions are a primary issue amongst colleagues and in a variety of everyday interactions.  Utilizing the clinical framework of Interpersonal Neurobiology, this training will equip attendees with cutting-edge understanding of the function and messages of emotions as well as lay a foundation to improve regulation in a more efficient and effective manner while reducing shame and increasing engagement in the client.
What is an emotion? When seen through the lens of the whole-person, neuroscience-informed framework of Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB), the answer to this seemingly straightforward question can take us to new places in clinical treatment that can open doors that have long been shut, locked, and even barricaded. For far too long, emotions have been misunderstood, mislabeled, and mistaken for character flaws. This causes many to avoid, deny, push away, and refuse to discuss them. Whether it’s a therapist addressing everyday dysfunctions in communication with couples, a business person attempting to negotiate a deal with a CEO, or political pundits discussing an accord with a government leader, understanding the true nature of emotions, what they tell us, and how to regulate them can reduce shame, increase and enhance engagement, and improve outcomes. This short course will lay the foundation for this new understanding of emotions and regulation. As it stems from an “all-science” framework, the knowledge can be integrated into many popular approaches to hone and target their effectiveness. Participants will be introduced to the domains of integration, learn the specific messages of key emotions, and practical ways to recognize somatic and behavioral cues that affect and distort cognitive narratives. These will be applied in practical ways that will help practitioners reach those who traditionally resist clinical work in emotions.

Hannah Smith, MA, LMHC, CGP

Hannah founded Potential Finders Network, LLC, a book author and blog writer, coach/consultant, international board-certified group psychotherapist (CGP), and nationwide trainer from the Seattle area.  As a neurodivergent person, how the brain works has always fascinated her. Over the last two decades, she has extensively studied neuroscience-informed clinical treatment and is certified by the Mindsight Institute in Interpersonal Neurobiology. She greatly enjoys applying this knowledge to all her clinical and educational work. Her experience, both personally and professionally, living & working both in the US and abroad, has allowed her to develop multi-modal, culturally competent, cutting-edge & relevant training programs.  Hannah guest lectures in academic, clinical, and corporate settings around the US and globally. She has developed an engaging presentation style that challenges attendees to stretch while making the learning of difficult information both accessible and fun! Her passion is to educate others on practical, whole-person approaches to personal and professional development to help those she works with reach their greatest potential!

After this training, participants will be able to:

  2. List and recognize the messages of emotion and the role of emotional granularity in the stories we tell ourselves to improve bilateral connection.

  • You notify us at least 72 hours prior to the event start time.
  • Credit is valid for up to 6 months from the original event date.
  • No credit will be issued for no-shows or cancellations made on the same day.

Florida Certification Board

Clinical Events is approved by the Florida Certification Board (FCB) to offer continuing education programs (Provider # 5527-A).

Canada Social Workers

BC, AB, SK, MB, ON, and QC accept ASWB ACE-approved provider programs to meet licensure renewal requirements.  Licensees are responsible for determining whether courses meet the CE requirements in their province.
