The goal of this training is to improve clinicians’ understanding of basic Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) strategies in helping clients cope with urges to engage in self-directed violence (SDV) or suicide. This course will provide an overview of basic concerns connected to assessment and intervention related to SDV and suicide, as well as the basics of DBT strategies to help afflicted clients reduce suffering overall and maintain safety.

In this presentation, I will cover treatment strategies that will include the basics of empathy in providing support, the importance of assessment and related strategies (as well as important concerns and tripping points related to assessment), the basics of mood regulation/de-escalation strategies, as well as DBT-specific coping skills to reduce suffering overall and help clients maintain safety.

Charles Jacob, PhDCharles Jacob, PhD, is a psychologist, research scientist, and author with over 20 years of clinical experience conducting and overseeing the delivery of mental health services to individuals with severe mood and personality disorders. He is a recognized expert in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Motivational Interviewing (MI) and has delivered workshops, seminars, and courses on these topics at universities and institutions throughout the world. He has held numerous academic positions, and currently works as a research associate for a Washington DC-based consulting firm. He is a past president of the ACA’s Pennsylvania branch and has been a featured interviewee on several episodes of NPR’s The Pulse.

After this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Analyze basic techniques for managing SI and SDV as they apply to dialectical behavior therapy as well as treatment in general.
  2. Determine methods of applying specific DBT skills in their work setting that will help clients to refrain from suicidal behaviors and SDV.
  3. Appraise specific approaches to explaining basic techniques for managing SI and SDV principles to clients.
