Mindfulness in Therapeutic Communication

May 3, 2025

10:00 AM - 1:15 PM (EST)

Virtual Event
3 CE Credits
This workshop seeks to enhance awareness of power dynamics in therapeutic relationships and improve related communication practices. Many practitioners lack training in managing these power differentials while maintaining empathetic and nonjudgmental interactions, which can lead to miscommunication and harm.
This workshop introduces practitioners to the practice of Power-Conscious Nonviolent Communication (PNVC), a mindfulness practice and therapeutic tool that melds Nonviolent Communication (NVC) with a focus on integrating power dynamics. This approach addresses the often implicit and unspoken power dynamics within therapeutic relationships, making these dynamics explicit so that the practitioner can mindfully hold their power with more responsibility and heart. When integrated with the core teachings of Nonviolent Communication, which improves empathic engagement and communication of needs and feelings, this approach enriches therapeutic presence, therapeutic effectiveness, and client care.

Ki Smith (she/they) is an IFS-trained Contemplative Psychotherapist, an affiliated teacher with the Right Use of Power Institute, and a skilled facilitator, mediator, and coach specializing in compassionate communication, power-consciousness, and conflict
transformation. In her private practice, Warrior Wisdom, Ki works with individuals and people in all types of intimate relationships who seek to heal relationally by approaching both inner and outer conflict with slowness, curiosity, kindness, and openness to holding multiple truths. Ki also offers a 12-week Language for the Open-Hearted Warrior course, which builds these skills
by integrating The Right Use of Power™, Nonviolent Communication, and Internal Family Systems. She is deeply passionate about co-creating a beloved community, recognizing it as integral to the transformational healing of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and systemic suffering. Ki believes that the heart of healing lies in reconnecting to the truth that we each inherently belong—and that we need one another to remember this truth. Outside her professional work, Ki enjoys blues and ecstatic dancing, making music with her voice and guitar, and cultivating medicinal plants.

After this training, participants will be able to:

1. Identify and describe the four types of power (personal, role, status, and systemic) and their impact on therapeutic relationships.

2. Demonstrate Nonviolent Communication (NVC) by translating at least two judgmental statements into observations, feelings, needs, and requests.

3. Apply power-conscious communication strategies by reflecting on and articulating feelings and needs within a real-world feedback scenario involving a power differential.
